Fair questions
What counts as an editor vs. a viewer?
Editors create or change data — parts, BOMs, documents, ECOs, workflows. Viewers browse, search, view 3D models, and participate in approvals. Viewers are unlimited and free on every plan, forever.
What's actually free?
The complete core PLM, self-hosted, under AGPL-3.0: parts, BOMs, ECO-as-Branch change management, documents, workflows, vault, search, APIs, the 3D viewer, and the AI chat assistant (BYO key). Unlimited users. It's a complete system, not a trial.
Why would I pay if self-hosting is free?
Three reasons people do: they want us to run and update it (Managed Cloud), their legal team can't approve the AGPL (commercial license), or they need enterprise capabilities — CAD and ERP connectors, SSO, the AI Design Engine, SLAs — which are commercially licensed and fund the open core.
Can I switch between self-host and managed later?
Yes. It's the same product and the same database schema. We migrate you either direction — that's a fixed-fee implementation engagement if you want help, or documentation if you don't.
How does AI pricing work?
You bring your own model API keys (Anthropic, OpenAI) and external service accounts (zoo.dev) — we don't mark up tokens. The Design Engine add-on prices the capability, not your usage.
ITAR / GovCloud?
Self-hosting inside your own boundary is the cleanest ITAR story and works on the free core or a commercial license. For sovereign managed deployments (AWS GovCloud or your private cloud), that's an Enterprise add-on.
